Emily didn’t think she’d end up as a midwife. In fact, the first birth she attended was a goats’. Before entering the world of birth work, Emily worked in non-profit advocacy. Her educational background is in psychology with a focus in child and family studies. It wasn’t until her own birth and loss experiences that her passion for comprehensive, family-centered care during the childbearing years became apparent. She began by becoming a certified doula, but quickly realized her calling was to midwifery.
Emily began her training with Dr. Regina Flanagan and immediately appreciated how respect and thoughtfulness permeates midwifery care. Throughout her apprenticeship, she has studied under a couple of other, incredible midwives and also worked as a medical assistant at Sunshine Family Healthcare, solidifying clinical skills and broadening her understanding of wellness care.
Their two young boys keep Emily and her husband on their toes, and as a family they enjoy spending time outside, reading, learning, and generally just enjoying/surviving the chaos of toddlerhood. Emily is a serial hobbyist and is known for starting new projects simply to learn how to do a new thing.
Emily will finish her licensing as a CPM in Fall 2024. She loves being a midwife and is grateful to be joining Sunshine Family Midwifery and to continue learning from Dr. Flanagan, Dr. Juarez, and the incredible families of the Willamette Valley.
